Elefantinho Colorido Colorful Little Elephant
Primeiro capítulo do meu próximo livro. First chapter of my next book. A mental-health talk, fully aligned with compliance. A flawless deck. A coffee-break fly, completely in control. Until Karen opens her mouth.

A coffee-break fly's life is a bitch. That crackly crust on bakery pão de queijo. That granulated glycerin drizzle, crudely spattered over yesterday's carrot cake. All those vibrant little juices. A true call of gravity, saying
— come on, just come.
But no, the clapping won't allow it. The clapping always drives us away from our most intimate calling. I mean, speaking as flies.
Pousar. Except anyone who's reached the seniority level I have in this business knows the duel is short-lived. When they finally sit down and focus on looking like they're paying attention, it's like the Red Sea parting. And we can finally do what nature calls us to do. Land.
In the atrium of inattention that pulls every gaze from that all-inclusive buffet to the deck (God, I love a good deck), we get to gorge ourselves silly.
Não naquele dia. Not that day.
That day, Karen's question put every plan on hold.
I actually felt sorry for the guy up front. His mustache slowly dewing over, greased with ever-thicker droplets of desperation, surprise, and salt. The pizza-crust ring of sweat under his arm outdid the label on his brand-name shirt — so crisply pressed, so neatly tucked into pants as expensive as they were tight.
It was September. On his first day in that position, he had a task as soft as chewing water for someone of his stature. Give a talk. And he had it all. A fancy title in English stamped across his face, a résumé of big-name companies propping up the ever-prominent arch of his chest, and a deck studded with data-driven information in trendy shades of yellow.
And everything was going great for all of us. Until, for God knows what reason, somewhere around slide five, the poor guy drops the unassuming question
— Alright folks, so far, any questions?
To this day I don't know what the hell the question even was. In my defense, back around slide two, I'd found the perfect guy. A middle-aged diabetic with the delusional self-confidence of someone flaunting good blood sugar. That still-warm cup, three sugar packets soaked in coffee at the bottom, tipped on its side. Perfect. Next thing I knew, once I'd had my fill, I went off to catch up with the crowd that usually hangs around the croissant box. And by the time I flew back up, everything had gone still. Suspended.
Menos a boca da Karen. Except Karen's mouth.
Karen's mouth was chewing up every one of those words out loud with no filter no breath no comma and no chance of being interrupted dissecting her point and exposing her knot and forcing out the guts of that Sunday saying things that should never be said in spaces cultivated under fluorescent light there was no way to escape no way to stop that Sunday from dealing out its cards again me and my friend used to play whatever involved jumping from one height to another in her building's lobby I was maybe six or seven she was whatever age made her a year older than that does a year make that much difference at that age between knowing what's about to happen and not being able to suspect it? I wonder if she knew when she said to me
— you go first
after the dark-haired guy in the black jacket, the son of her neighbor who was already quite old, showed up and asked
— do you want to play colorful little elephant?
and he explained that his rules for the game were different that it had to be one at a time to make it more fun and that we had to go to the hidden little corner to make it even more fun and close our eyes and open our mouths and try to guess the color of the little elephant's trunk was I first because I thought I was good at guessing or because I felt special having all that attention just for me? I know I followed him to the hidden little corner I know I closed my eyes and opened my mouth I know I felt the sweat of his hand wetting the top of my head positioned so few centimeters off the ground that between the beats of my heart thud-thud-thud-thud I heard the sound of a zipper zzzzzip and that I cheated I couldn't help it I peeked I wanted to win the prize I wanted to say exactly right the color of the little elephant's trunk and be able to tell my friend I'd gotten it right on the first try what happened after the meeting between the blurred slit of my eyes that wanted to see and the petrifying eye of that straight trunk that wanted to play in the hidden tiny little corner of my mouth are instants of static clicks with no before or after like in a dream where you simply sprout into some random scene then out of nowhere I'm back in front of my friend she's laughing and saying to me
— well, you are kind of a sucker
then I'm back again in the garage at home I'm standing in front of my mother she's trembling and saying to me
— for the love of God, your father can't know anything about this
And now I understand exactly this dream thing. I can't explain how either, but when I found myself back from that jolt, I was still hovering in the air — hadn't budged a millimeter from the croissant box, and the worst part is they were chicken croissants, I'm obsessed with chicken croissants — and the room breathed empty. Except for the satisfaction-survey QR code still projected on the wall, which the guy with the English job title stared at without actually seeing. The chairs, a little crooked but already back in their places. Funny thing. Everything was, but wasn't. It was like looking at a Dalí painting. I appear, without knowing how, out in the open area, dodging the claps now working to scatter the thick gray smoke between one drag and another.
My God, how everything stank. There's stuff in this life that's worse than shit.

2. My goal is for you to feel what the method looks like in practice — what it means to go all the way down into silenced, complex, sensitive subjects without holding back, and turn that into structures people can inhabit, move through, and recognize as their own.
3. Se você sentiu, o método é pra você. Se não, não. E tudo bem. 3. If you felt it, the method is for you. If not, it isn't. And that's fine.
